Empress Eugenie's holdings exhibited at Suez Canal Museum

Empress Eugenie's holdings exhibited at Suez Canal Museum

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, in coordination with the Ministry of Awqaf (Endowments) and the Suez Canal Authority transferred a collection of artifacts from the possessions of Empress Eugenie to the Suez Canal Authority Museum.

This comes within the framework of the ministry’s policy to make the best use of the artifacts stored in the warehouses and to re-employ them.

Head of the Islamic, Coptic and Jewish Antiquities Sector Osama Talaat stated that these holdings consist of a number of chairs and sofas. It was prepared by Khedive Ismail to receive Empress Eugenie to attend the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal. The furniture was then owned by Khedive Ismail’s children.

Talaat further pointed out that these pieces are in the custody of the Ministry of Awqaf, and that they were preserved in Qubbat Afandina and the dome of Princess Shivakiar.
